Months of meticulous and collaborative planning along with amazing team work in the run up to, and during, the works to extend the bridge, enabled Worcestershire County Council to open the road ahead of schedule.
The project will see the existing A4440 between Ketch and Powick roundabouts dualled, including Carrington Bridge over the Severn, a notorious bottleneck. This mammoth scheme will see the dualling of the A4440 Southern Link Road between the M5 and Powick. “This progress is despite the challenges the scheme has faced over the last 12 months with extensive flooding and the pandemic.

The all-important steel frame that will form the bridge span will be constructed in segments onsite and each segment lifted into place by one of the biggest cranes in the UK over the next few weeks.

The work is part of the fourth and final phase of the scheme to fully dual the A4440 Southern Link Road from Junction 7 of the M5 to the Powick roundabout.
To complete the next phase of works, it will be necessary to have a limited number of lane restrictions on both the Powick and Ketch Roundabouts. During the road and rail closures, more than 4000 person hours and 60 different pieces of significant machinery will be needed to complete the bridge move. The bridge on the A4440 was moved into position on Sunday (27) by a team of 180 engineers who worked around the clock in 3 x 8 hour shifts and its addition marks another step closer to Worcestershire County Council reaching its aim of fully dualling the road from the M5 to Powick roundabout, Worcester. Dualling of the A4440 Southern Link Road is one of the largest infrastructure projects to be undertaken in the county. Once the dualling is complete, journey times to and from the M5 are expected to be considerably improved and be more reliable. “The Government is investing record amounts to improve journeys in our towns and cities, boosting local economies.
It will also improve connectivity between the city centre and the new Worcestershire Parkway Station, currently under construction just off M5 Junction 7.
The bypass will also help improve air quality, and will also see two new bridges, new cycle and pedestrian routes as well as junction improvements.
These bridge widening works are part of the fourth and final phase of Worcestershire County Council’s scheme to fully dual the A4440 Southern Link Road (SLR) from Junction 7 of the M5 to the Powick Roundabout. This is scheduled to be done by Spring 2019. Work has also, this week, started to construct the road under the bridge so dualling of the road between these roundabouts can be completed. At the same time as the fence installation, vegetation from the southern side of the road (on the left as you drive towards the Powick Roundabout from the Ketch) will be removed as the new two lane road will be built on this side. The forward funding and additional funding needed to complete the 3 footbridges was also agreed at Cabinet today – the aim is to complete all three bridges within the next 18 months. At the end of May, a 1,500 tonne railway bridge extension was moved into place between Whittington and Norton Roundabouts.
Once moved into place, the new bridge is then fixed to the existing bridge and the area to the south is backfilled to make an embankment.
Work continues to complete the ramp to and from the Crookbarrow Way footpath and this is expected to be open early next year.
